The silhouette series, 14 karat gold and champleve enameled jewelry by Jonathan Wahl, is inspired by ancient cameos which were re-set into rings in the 18th & 19th centuries. Wahl’s work a series of pieces; rings, earrings and pendants have an ancient, antique, contemporary and androgynous style simultaneously. Each piece features a vintage silhouette which is champleve enameled into the setting creating a flush inlay of enamel into the gold. The images vary from birds and animals to tools and contemporary machinery. The silhouettes embody unique a sense of presence and loss and their stark, retro settings are the perfect mix of old and new.
Jonathan Wahl has received a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Award, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and the Pennsylvania Society of Goldsmiths Outstanding Achievement Award. His metalwork and jewelry has been featured in Metalsmith Magazine on numerous occasions and most recently in W Jewelry. His sculpture has been reviewed in the New York Times and in Art in America. Wahl’s work is represented in the collection of the Museum of Art and Design, formerly the American Craft Museum.
